    The Sacred Foundation

    The Sacred Foundation

In the year 670, the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi chose this blessed site to establish Kairouan, the first Islamic city in the Maghreb. Legend tells that when he thrust his spear into the earth, a spring of pure water emerged, and wild beasts and serpents fled, recognizing the sacred nature of this place.

    The Age of Scholars

    The Age of Scholars

Kairouan flourished as the intellectual heart of North Africa. The Great Mosque became a beacon of learning, attracting scholars from Córdoba to Baghdad. During this golden period, our palace was built by a wealthy merchant family, its rooms designed to host poets, theologians, and travelers along the caravan routes.

    The Great Mosque

One of the oldest and most important mosques in the Islamic world, just steps from our palace doors.

    UNESCO Recognition

Kairouan's medina, including our palace quarter, was designated a World Heritage Site in 1988.
